Most foundation mismatches on deeper skin are undertone mistakes, not depth mistakes. A shade can be exactly the right darkness and still look gray, orange or ashy because the undertone is wrong. Ranges have improved a great deal, and matching within them is a matter of method rather than luck.
Deeper skin runs warm, golden, red, olive, neutral and cool, and the range is wider than most shade charts allow. A warm-golden foundation on skin with red undertones looks orange; a neutral foundation on olive skin looks gray. Look at the veins on your inner wrist in daylight, look at whether gold or silver jewelry sits better against your skin, and look at whether your skin goes reddish or golden in the sun. None is conclusive alone; together they point the right way.
Your face is usually lighter than your neck and chest, particularly after a summer, so matching to the face alone can leave a visible line. Match to the jaw and check the neck. If you are between two depths, the darker one usually looks more natural than the lighter one, since a slightly lighter foundation reads as ashy on deeper skin far more than a slightly darker one reads as heavy.
Many foundations darken and turn warmer over the first hour as they react with the air and the oils on your skin. A shade that matched perfectly at the counter can look a shade darker and more orange by lunchtime. Test it, wear it for an hour, then judge it. This is the single most common reason a bought foundation does not match at home.
Stripe two or three candidate shades along the jawline, from cheek down onto the neck, and go outside or to a window. Store lighting flatters everything. The right shade disappears into the skin; the wrong ones sit on top of it. Do not test on the hand or the inner arm, which are rarely the same tone as the face.
If no single shade is right, two usually are. Owning a shade slightly warmer and one slightly cooler, or one lighter and one deeper, lets you mix to match through the year as your skin changes. A drop of a color-adjusting shade, red to warm a foundation that looks gray, yellow to counter one that looks too red, corrects a near-miss. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry ranges built for deeper skin, and the staff will let you stripe and check by the door.
