Building a Basic Skin Care Routine

Skin care is sold as a ten-step ritual and works perfectly well as a three-step one. Our Detroit store off Gratiot near 7 Mile stocks cleansers, moisturizers, treatments and sun protection, and a routine that gets used every day beats an elaborate one that doesn't.

The three that matter

A cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. That is a complete, effective routine, and everything else is an addition to it rather than a replacement for it. Skipping moisturizer because skin is oily makes oiliness worse, since skin compensates for being stripped. Sunscreen matters on every skin tone, including deep ones, for protection against damage and hyperpigmentation.

The order to apply

Thinnest to thickest. Cleanser, then toner if you use one, then any serum or treatment, then moisturizer, then sunscreen in the morning or a facial oil at night. Applying a thick cream before a thin serum means the serum never reaches the skin. Give each layer a moment to absorb.

Adding a treatment

Once the basics are consistent, one active at a time. Introduce it slowly, a couple of nights a week, and give it several weeks before judging. Adding three new actives at once means you learn nothing when skin reacts badly, and irritated skin looks worse than untreated skin. Patch-test anything new on the jaw first.

When it's not a product problem

Persistent acne, painful cystic breakouts, sudden rashes, patches that change or don't heal, and hair loss along with skin changes are all reasons to see a doctor or dermatologist rather than to buy another product. Skin care from a shelf manages ordinary skin; it doesn't treat conditions.

Our Detroit store is at 15221 Houston Whittier St, just off Gratiot near 7 Mile on the east side, and it's the one that handles every online pickup order. It opens at 8:45 AM every day but Sunday, with the latest closing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 PM. Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
