Summer Hair Care and Humidity

Michigan summers bring the opposite problem to the winters: too much moisture in the air rather than too little. Straightened hair reverts, curls swell and frizz, sweat sits under protective styles, and everything that worked in February stops working in July. The routine that fits is lighter, cleaner and washed more often.

Reversion is physics, not a product failure

Straightened textured hair holds its shape because heat temporarily reshaped hydrogen bonds in the strand. Humidity puts water back, the bonds reform, and the curl returns. No serum prevents this indefinitely, and anti-humidity products only slow it. If you want straight hair through a humid August, the honest options are accepting daily touch-ups, wearing a unit, or choosing a style that works with the texture instead.

Lighter products, more often

Heavy butters and thick creams that sealed beautifully in January feel greasy in July and trap sweat against the scalp. Switch to lighter leave-ins, water-based refreshers and gels rather than creams. You will also wash more often, because sweat and sunscreen accumulate, and a weekly routine may need to become twice weekly. Add a clarifying wash monthly if you are not already doing one.

Sun, chlorine and lake water

Sun fades color and dries hair over a season, and it is worth a hat or a light oil with some UV protection on long days outdoors. Chlorine is harsher: rinse hair with clean water before getting into a pool, so the strand absorbs that water rather than pool water, and rinse again immediately after. A chelating shampoo removes chlorine and mineral residue that ordinary shampoo leaves behind, which matters if you swim regularly.

Sweat under a protective style

Braids and units hold heat, and a sweating scalp under a style worn for weeks needs attention. Wash the scalp on the two to three week schedule regardless of how the braids look, dry the roots properly, and use a witch hazel or diluted apple cider vinegar wipe along the parts between washes. A satin-lined cap for outdoor work is more comfortable than it sounds and reduces the salt sitting on the scalp.
