Straight is the least forgiving texture on the wig wall. Waves and curls break up light and hide the cap, the knots and any unevenness in the fiber. Straight hair does none of that. Every flaw sits in a flat plane where the eye can find it, which is why a good straight unit looks superb and a poor one gets clocked from across a room.
The single most common giveaway on a synthetic straight unit is shine. Real hair reflects light unevenly; cheap synthetic fiber reflects it like plastic, in a hard band down the length. Blends and better synthetics are made specifically to cut that gloss, and it is worth turning a unit under the store lights before buying rather than judging it in a photograph. Dry shampoo or a light dusting of translucent powder tones down a shine you have already bought, though it is a fix rather than a solution.
Straight hair lies close to the head, so density that would look normal on a wave looks like a helmet here. Lower density, in the 130 to 150 percent range, is nearly always the more convincing choice on a straight unit. Anything higher needs to be thinned or layered to sit right, and thinning a wig is not something to attempt casually.
With no texture to distract, attention goes straight to the part. This is where lace earns its price: a lace front or HD lace gives a parting with visible scalp and individually knotted hairs, while a basic cap shows a sewn seam. If the unit has lace, plucking a few hairs along the hairline to make it less uniform, and tinting the lace to your skin tone, are the two adjustments that change the most.
If you leave any of your own hair out at the front, it has to match, and straight hair gives you nowhere to hide a mismatch. Textured natural hair pressed straight against a bone-straight unit rarely looks right, and repeated flat ironing to force the match is how leave-out gets destroyed. A unit with no leave-out required, or a texture closer to your own, is the kinder answer.
Straight units tangle less than any other texture, which is their real practical advantage. Comb from the ends up, wash cool, and dry on a stand. Avoid heat on any fiber not labeled heat-friendly, since a flat iron on standard synthetic melts it in one pass.
