Layered Wigs and Why Layers Help

Layers do more for a wig than for a real head of hair, and the reason is that a wig's main tell is uniformity. Hair cut to one length across a cap, all the same density, all falling identically, is a shape that does not occur naturally. Layers break that up, which is why a layered unit at a modest price often passes better than a blunt one that cost more.

Movement

A blunt cut moves as a single sheet. Layered hair moves at different rates, which is what makes it look alive rather than placed. This matters most on long units, where the sheer volume of hair in one plane is the least convincing thing about them, and least on short units, where there is no length to move anyway.

Face framing

The shortest layers at the front are the ones that do the visible work, softening the line where the unit meets the face and drawing attention away from the hairline. A curtain of face-framing pieces around the cheekbones is the most flattering configuration on most people and the easiest to ask a stylist for. It also gives you a place to put your hands, which sounds trivial until you are wearing a unit that you cannot touch anywhere without disturbing it.

Layers hide density problems

A unit that is too dense looks bulky and obviously artificial. Layering removes weight without removing coverage, so the shape sits closer to the head while the cap stays hidden. This is the standard fix for a 180 or 200 percent unit that looks like too much hair. It is also why layered units are more forgiving on the wall: they are already carrying a shape rather than relying on you to give them one.

Cutting a unit

A wig can be cut, and a stylist who works on units will do it better than you will. If you cut it yourself, three rules save most mistakes: cut it dry, because synthetic fiber does not shrink back the way wet hair does and you will take off more than you meant to; cut it on a stand rather than on your head; and take half of what you think you need, then look. Fiber does not grow back.

Which units come layered

Most bob and shoulder-length units on the wall have some layering built in, and long straight units are the ones most often sold blunt. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry both, and everything is also on kellybeautyonline.com with $4.99 shipping anywhere in Michigan.
