Eight to twelve weeks between touch-ups, applied only to the new growth at the root. The whole difficulty of a touch-up is that you are trying to treat half an inch of hair while avoiding the hair right next to it, and the consequences of getting that wrong are concentrated in one place.
Too little new growth means there is nothing to apply the relaxer to without it landing on hair that has already been processed. Under eight weeks you are almost guaranteed to overlap. Waiting also gives the scalp and the hair time to recover from the previous service, which matters more than most schedules acknowledge.
Past twelve weeks the difference between the two textures becomes pronounced, and the point where they meet is where the hair is weakest. That junction tangles, catches during detangling and snaps. Some people stretch to sixteen weeks deliberately and manage it with careful handling and protective styles, but it is a stretch that requires more work rather than less.
Relaxer applied to previously relaxed hair processes it a second time, and hair does not have a second time to give. It breaks, and it breaks in a line at the root, which is where people find sudden thinning after a touch-up that felt like it went fine. Base the previously relaxed hair with conditioner or petroleum before applying, apply only to the new growth, smooth with the back of a comb or your fingers rather than combing through, and rinse on time.
The nape and the crown are usually the coarsest and the slowest to process, and the hairline is the finest and the fastest. Starting at the back gives the tougher sections the longest exposure and the delicate ones the shortest, which is the opposite of what happens if you start at the front. The hairline and the nape are also the first places relaxer damage shows.
Relaxed hair does not repair, so the weeks between services are about protection rather than recovery. A protein treatment a week after the touch-up, deep conditioning weekly, low heat, gentle detangling and satin at night. If your hair is breaking at the roots after each touch-up, the cause is almost always overlap or timing, and it is worth having the next one done professionally to see the difference.
