A sleek ponytail is the style most likely to be worn several times a week, which makes it the one where small habits add up fastest. Most of the damage people blame on the style comes from the tools and the technique rather than the ponytail itself, and a smooth result does not actually require force. It requires the right product for your texture and a little patience while it sets.

Picking the product by texture and finish

Coarse or very curly hair needs a firmer gel or a pomade to stay flat; fine or loose-textured hair goes flat and greasy under the same product and does better with a light cream or a foam. Judge the finish as well as the hold, since a high-shine gel on thin hair shows scalp while a matte cream does not. If you need the strongest hold in the aisle every single time, the hair is probably still too dry to cooperate, and a little leave-in first changes what you need.

The brush matters more than the product

A soft boar-bristle or a fine-toothed brush smooths the surface with far less friction than a stiff synthetic one, and friction is what breaks the fine hair at the front. Work a small amount of product through with your hands so the brush is not doing the spreading, then brush in one direction only, following the way the ponytail is going. Brushing back and forth to chase one stray hair costs more than leaving it.

Setting it, and taking it down

Tie a satin scarf over the front for a while and let the product dry before you move, which buys a cleaner finish than a second coat would. At the end of the day, wet the base and the edges to release the product before you untie anything, then unwrap rather than sliding the tie down.
