Edge Boosters, Gels and Strong-Hold Laying Products

The strong-hold end of the edge aisle covers boosters, firm gels and laying products, and they do a specific job well and an everyday job badly. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry them alongside the lighter creams.

What they're built for

Sleek styles that need to survive humidity, a long shift or a night out. Coarse or resistant hair that won't lie down for a lighter product. And laying lace on a wig or frontal, where the product is gripping lace against skin rather than smoothing your own hairline. For those jobs they're the right tool.

Where they go wrong

Used daily on your own edges, a firm gel plus hard brushing plus incomplete washing is a combination that breaks the finest hairs at the front. If your edges are already sparse, a strong hold product is the wrong direction. A lighter cream, a softer brush and a break from laying altogether does more.

Getting a clean finish

Slightly damp hair, a small amount, applied with an edge brush in short strokes working the product in rather than painting it on, then a satin scarf tied over the hairline for ten to fifteen minutes. The setting time does more for the finish than any extra product.

Washing out properly

Strong-hold products are the ones that build up fastest. Wash the hairline with shampoo at least weekly, and use a clarifying wash occasionally if you use them most days. Buildup along the hairline is a common cause of itching and irritation that gets blamed on the style instead.
