Long units are the most bought and the most abandoned. They look best on the wall and take the most work to keep looking that way, and almost every complaint about a long wig traces back to one of two things nobody mentions at the point of sale: how much it weighs on the cap, and what happens where the hair meets your collar.
Wigs are sold with a density figure, commonly from 130 percent up past 200. It describes how much hair is packed into the cap, and on a long unit it changes everything about how the wig sits and moves. High density on long hair looks dramatic and is heavy, hot and obviously a wig from behind if it is fuller than any real head of hair. Between 130 and 150 percent reads as natural on most people, and it is also the range that stays comfortable through a full day.
Hair that reaches past the shoulders rubs constantly against clothing, and that friction works the fiber into a mat at the back of the neck. On synthetic units it is the first place that goes rough and stays rough, because the damage is physical rather than dryness. Sweaters and wool coats accelerate it, which matters here from October onward. Wearing the hair forward over the shoulders, gathering it up on long travel days, and detangling from the ends upward every evening extends a unit's life more than any product will.
A short synthetic unit forgives a lot. A long one does not, because there is more of it to tangle and more surface catching on everything. If you intend to wear a long unit most days, human hair earns the difference in price by surviving the wash and the friction. If you want length occasionally, a synthetic unit worn a dozen times is the cheaper way to have it.
A long unit takes real time to dry, and hanging it wet stretches the cap. Wash it in cool water working downward, blot it in a towel, and dry it on a stand rather than a folded towel so air reaches underneath. Between wears, a stand keeps the length from creasing; a drawer guarantees a bend you will have to fight.
Pick the unit up. The weight in your hand is a fair preview of the weight on your head after four hours. Check the hair at the very bottom, since the ends are where thin, over-processed hair shows first, and run your fingers up through the back to see whether the fiber already catches.
