Line-Ups and Edging at Home

A line-up is the sharp defined edge around the hairline, the temples and the neck. It is the part of a cut people notice first and the part most easily ruined at home, because every mistake is a subtraction: you can always take more, and you can never put it back until it grows.

The tool

A T-blade trimmer with a close, exposed blade, not a clipper. Clippers cut bulk, and their blade geometry cannot produce a crisp edge. A trimmer with a zero-gapped blade gives the sharpest line, though a very close blade also raises the risk of irritation and bumps along the neck, so it is a trade rather than a free upgrade. Keep the blade clean, oiled and sharp; a dull trimmer drags and produces a ragged line that tempts you into another pass.

Follow your hairline, do not invent one

The single most common home mistake is straightening a hairline that is naturally curved or rounded. Everyone's hairline has a shape, usually with a slight arc across the front and a curve at the temples, and cutting a hard straight line across it removes hair that will look wrong until it grows back. Work with what is there. Remove the strays outside the line rather than redefining the line itself.

The receding trap

Each time you line up, there is a temptation to go back a fraction to catch every stray hair and make it perfectly even. Do that every two weeks for a year and you have moved your hairline back visibly. Barbers call it edging yourself back, and it is one of the more common causes of a hairline that looks like it has receded when it has actually been cut away. Line up on the hair rather than behind it, and accept slightly less sharpness for a hairline that stays where it is.

Technique

Good light and two mirrors, one in front and one behind for the neck. Work with the trimmer flat against the skin, moving with light pressure, and cut the outline first before cleaning inside it. Small movements. Do the front, then each temple, then the neck last. For the neck, follow the natural growth line, and resist squaring it off high, which looks sharp for a week and then grows in as a visible band.

What to leave to a barber

The first line-up after a big change of style, anything involving a design, and any correction of a line that has gone wrong. A barber can also tell you where your natural hairline actually sits, which is useful information if you have been edging yourself back without realizing it.
