Shavers and Trimmers in Metro Detroit

Trimmers and shavers do different jobs from clippers, and using one for the other's work is what wears both out early. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry them alongside the clippers, with blades and guards.

Trimmers

Built for the line-up, the neckline and around the ears, with a narrow head and a close blade for a square edge. A trimmer is what gives a haircut its finished outline. Edging with a full-size clipper blunts it fast and gives a less precise line, which is why most people carrying one machine end up wanting two.

Shavers

Foil and rotary shavers finish a bald fade or a head shave closer than a clipper or trimmer can, cutting flush without a blade against the skin. Foil shavers give the closest finish on a head; rotary handles contours. Neither is meant for bulk hair removal, so they follow a clipper rather than replacing one.

Blades and maintenance

Oil the blade every couple of cuts and wipe the excess, since oil that sits collects hair dust and turns to paste. Brush the teeth clean rather than tapping the blade, which knocks the alignment out. Replace a blade when it starts pulling rather than waiting for it to fail mid-cut, and keep a spare for every machine in regular use.

Buying with the machine in mind

Blades and guards are model-specific, so a machine with easily available replacements outlasts one with a longer feature list. Corded machines never lose power mid-cut; cordless move freely around a chair. Machines that run either way remove the choice.
