Cutting Hair at Home: A Starting Guide

A simple all-over cut with a guard is genuinely easy and worth learning. A fade is not, and the gap between those two is wider than most first-time attempts allow for. Starting with the easy version, on clean dry hair, with the right guard, produces a good result on the first try.

Start longer than you want

The first rule and the one that saves every beginner. Put on a guard two sizes longer than your target, do the whole head, look at it, then go shorter if you still want to. Working down is a series of small decisions; starting too short is one large irreversible one. Hair also looks shorter cut than it does in the guard chart, particularly on curly hair, which springs up as it is released.

Clean, dry, detangled

Clippers are designed for dry hair and they pull on wet hair, which hurts and cuts unevenly. Wash and dry beforehand, and comb the hair into its natural fall. Product in the hair gums up the blade and blunts it.

Working around the head

Move against the direction of growth in smooth overlapping passes, starting at the bottom of one side and working up and around. Keep the clipper flat against the head on the sides and the back, and let it travel rather than pushing it. Go over each area more than once from different angles, since a single direction always misses hairs. Comb the hair out between passes to see what you have actually cut.

Blending, and why it is hard

Blending means removing the visible line where a shorter guard meets a longer one, and it is done by working the clipper up and flicking it away from the head at the transition, so the cut tapers rather than stopping abruptly. It takes practice and a light hand, and it is the single skill that separates a home cut from a barber cut. If you are new, an all-one-length cut with a clean line-up looks far better than an attempted fade with a step in it.

Mirrors and help

Two mirrors for the back, or a second person, and good overhead light. The back of your own head is the hardest part to judge and the part everyone else sees most. If you are cutting your own hair regularly, a three-way mirror setup is worth arranging once.

What to pay for

Fades, designs, corrections, and the first cut of a new style. A barber gets those right in twenty minutes and a beginner spends an hour making them worse. A reasonable pattern is a professional cut every few months to set the shape, with home maintenance in between.
