Six to eight weeks is the answer for box and knotless braids. Scalp braids like cornrows and feed-ins come out sooner, at two to four weeks, because there is no hanging bulk to disguise new growth. Twists sit around four to six. These are ceilings rather than targets, and taking a style down at six weeks in good condition is always better than pushing it to ten.
New growth at the root that has loosened the braid so it slides. Visible matting where shed hair has collected at the base. Braids that have started to unravel at the ends and cannot be neatened. A scalp that itches persistently despite washing, or that feels sore. Any single one of these is a reason to take the style down; two together means it is overdue.
Every hair you shed while the style is in stays trapped in the braid rather than falling out. Over six weeks that is manageable and comes out at take-down. Over twelve weeks it has matted at the root into a dense knot that has to be worked through, and that is where real breakage happens, not from the braiding itself. Locked matting is also why some people believe braids made their hair fall out when what actually happened was months of normal shedding released badly.
As new growth pushes the braid away from the scalp, the same weight hangs from a smaller anchor of hair at a worse angle. A braid that felt comfortable at week two can be pulling by week ten. This is where hairlines are lost, and it happens gradually enough that people do not notice until the style comes out.
Re-doing the perimeter braids alone buys another one to two weeks and is the honest way to extend a style, since the front is what looks grown out first. Refreshing with mousse tidies the appearance without addressing the root. What does not work is re-tightening braids at the scalp, which puts fresh tension exactly where the hair is most tired.
Do not go from one install straight into the next. Take down slowly with conditioner for slip, wash properly to clear weeks of buildup, deep condition, trim any splits, and give the hair at least a week of loose or low-tension wear. The rest between styles is doing as much work as the protective style itself.
