What You Need for Box Braids

Box braids anchor the extension at the root with a small knot, which is what makes them hold so firmly and why they've stayed the default protective style for decades. They install faster than knotless and use less hair for the same size, though the knot sits more heavily on the root.

The hair

Pre-stretched or bulk both work. Pre-stretched gives a cleaner taper at the ends and saves the stretching step; bulk is cheaper per pack and lets you set your own length. Synthetic is the standard. Blend adds softness at more cost, and human braiding hair is generally reserved for styles where the ends are worn loose.

How many packs

Fewer than knotless of the same size, since there's no feeding in. Small braids take considerably more than jumbo. Length matters more than most people expect: going from shoulder to waist length can push the count up by half again. Buy a couple over the estimate and return the unopened ones rather than topping up from a different batch, since batches can differ slightly in tone.

The tools

A rat-tail comb for parting, sectioning clips, small rubber bands, braiding gel for the parts and edge control for the perimeter. Mousse to smooth the finish. Hot water and a towel for sealing the ends, or a sealing alternative if you'd rather not use boiling water.

Parting matters more here

Box braid parts are square and visible, so uneven parting shows for the whole run of the style. Work in quadrants, take your time on the top rows that people actually see, and keep the sections consistent in size, since a mix of large and small braids reads as untidy rather than deliberate.

Wear and take-down

Six to eight weeks. Wash the scalp every couple of weeks and dry the roots properly. At take-down, cut well below your own hair's ends, unravel rather than pull, and spray with conditioner as you go. Expect a lot of shed hair; that's several weeks of normal shedding released at once, not breakage.
