What You Need for Knotless Braids

The hair

Pre-stretched packs are what most people use, because the tapered ends are already done and the feed-in method needs hair that's easy to split into graduated pieces. Bulk works if you prefer to stretch it yourself. Buy more than you would for box braids of the same size: feeding in means you're using small amounts at a time and adding repeatedly, and running short mid-head is the common complaint.

How much

Braid size and length drive the count far more than your own hair does. A medium knotless style at shoulder length takes noticeably less than the same size at waist length, because each braid carries hair down its whole run. Buy two or three packs over your estimate and return the unopened ones. That costs nothing and beats a second trip.

The tools

A rat-tail comb for clean, even parts, since knotless parting is visible in a way box braid parting is not. Enough sectioning clips to hold the head in quarters. Small rubber bands if you secure sections. Braiding gel or a light edge control for the parts, mousse for the finish, and hot water or a sealing alternative for the ends.

Tension is the whole point

Knotless exists to reduce tension, and installing it tightly throws that away. The first inch should feel secure, not tight, and there should be no bumps or soreness along the hairline on day one. If it hurts that evening, the braids at the front are too tight and loosening them is the fix, not waiting it out.

Aftercare

A satin scarf or bonnet from the first night. Diluted shampoo through an applicator bottle every couple of weeks, aimed at the scalp, then dried properly at the roots. A light scalp oil along the parts. Six to eight weeks is a comfortable run; past that the roots have grown out enough that the braid is pulling against shifted hair.
