Hooded and Bonnet Dryers in Metro Detroit

A hooded dryer does a job no handheld can: drying without airflow blasting the hair around. All four Kelly Beauty stores carry them, in standing hood form and as soft bonnet attachments that connect to a handheld dryer.

What they're for

Setting rollers, rods or a wrap, where direct air would disturb the set. Drying a deep conditioner with gentle heat, which helps it penetrate. Drying the roots of braids, a sew-in or a crochet install, where damp roots cause odor and scalp problems. And drying curly hair without breaking up the pattern.

Standing hood or soft bonnet

A standing hood is more comfortable for long sessions and gives even, hands-free heat, at the cost of taking up space. A soft bonnet attachment costs far less, packs away, and connects to the handheld dryer you already own, though it's less even and you're tethered to the dryer. For occasional roller sets the bonnet is enough; for weekly use the hood earns its space.

Why it matters after an install

Braids, a sew-in or a crochet style left to air dry at the roots often stay damp for hours under all that hair. That's the most common cause of the smell and itching people blame on the style. Twenty minutes under a hood after washing solves it.

Using one well

Medium heat rather than maximum, since the point is gentle even drying rather than speed. Make sure a set is completely dry before taking it down, because curls set as they cool and a damp set drops within the hour.
