A halo is a weft of hair hanging from a clear filament that runs over the top of the head like a headband worn backward. Nothing grips your hair, which is the whole appeal and also the source of every limitation the method has. How the wire sits

The filament crosses the back of the head at roughly crown height, resting on the hair rather than clamping to it, with the weft hanging below it. You pull a section of your own hair up and out of the way, settle the wire, then drop that section back down over the top of it. The wire usually adjusts at a bead or a knot, and getting the length right so it sits level and snug without digging in is the entire fitting process.

Hiding it properly

The layer of your own hair you drop over the wire has to be thick enough to hide both the filament and the top edge of the weft, which is why a halo works better on dense hair than on fine hair at the crown. Take a deeper section than feels necessary. Check the back in a second mirror or a phone camera, because the one spot you cannot see is exactly where the wire shows.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants length for a few hours without anything pulling, and especially anyone whose hair cannot take clips: fine hair, a tender scalp, a hairline already under strain. It is also the fastest method here, usually under a minute once the wire is adjusted, and it comes off in one movement at the end of the night.

What it cannot do

It adds length to hair worn down and that is all. You cannot wear a halo in a ponytail or an updo, because the wire would show immediately. It does not thicken the top or the sides, since all the hair hangs from one line at the back. It will shift if you are active, lie down, or spend the evening in wind, and a very long or very heavy piece pulls the wire backward out of place.

Wearing and storing one

Brush it before and after wearing, from the ends upward, and keep it hanging or lying flat rather than folded over the wire, which puts a kink in the filament that never fully comes out. Wash it only when the hair feels coated, since it never touches your scalp. If the wire stretches over time, most pieces can be re-knotted shorter, and a replacement filament is cheaper than a new piece.
