How to Apply Edge Control Without Flaking

Almost every complaint about edge control comes down to application rather than the product. White flakes, a greasy line along the forehead, edges that lift by lunchtime and buildup that won't wash out are all technique problems. Use far less than feels right

Quantity is where this goes wrong. A pea-sized amount does both sides of a hairline, and anything more sits on top of the hair instead of coating it. That surplus is what dries white and flakes, and reaching for more to fix it makes it worse rather than better.

Damp hair, not wet or dry

Edges lay best on hair that is slightly damp. Bone dry hair fights the brush and needs more product to move. Soaking wet hair dilutes the product so it never sets. A light mist from a spray bottle before you start is usually all that's needed.

Brush, then tie down

Apply with the brush in the direction you want the hair to go, in short strokes, working the product in rather than painting it on. Then tie a satin scarf firmly but not tightly over the hairline and leave it ten to fifteen minutes while you do something else. That setting time does more for the finish than any amount of extra product.

Washing it out properly

These products are built to resist water, so rinsing in the shower leaves a film behind. Over weeks that film collects dirt against the hairline and can irritate the skin and the follicles there. Wash the hairline deliberately with a proper cleanser rather than assuming the water reached it.
