Deep Wave Wigs

Deep wave is the most defined of the wave textures and the one that carries the most visual weight. On a unit it gives volume and a strong, repeating pattern, and it is the texture most likely to be bought for an occasion. It is also the one that punishes the wrong products fastest.

Density and the pattern together

Deep wave already reads as full because the pattern occupies space. Pairing it with a high density compounds that, and a 200 percent deep wave unit is an enormous amount of hair in practice, however it looked on the display. For everyday wear, a moderate density in this texture gives more volume than the same number in a straighter unit. Buy the density down, not up.

Length is shorter than the number

A defined S-pattern uses up length. A unit labeled 22 inches in deep wave wears noticeably shorter than a 22 inch straight unit, because the hair is traveling through curves rather than straight down. Allow for a few inches of difference when choosing, particularly if you are matching a length you have worn before in another texture.

Heavy product is the main mistake

Deep wave needs moisture, but the definition it is bought for is destroyed by weight. Butters, thick creams and generous oiling pull the pattern into limp strands and leave the unit looking dull and stringy. A watery leave-in and a few drops of light oil through the ends is the whole routine. If the unit already looks flat and greasy, the fix is a wash, not more product.

Refreshing between washes

Mix water with a small amount of leave-in in a spray bottle, mist section by section, and scrunch upward. Deep wave responds well to this because the pattern has real memory. On synthetic units, a rinse in hot water is often the strongest reset available, and it costs nothing. Let the unit dry undisturbed on a stand rather than combing it out damp.

Detangling

From the ends upward, wet, with plenty of conditioner, using fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Deep wave tangles at the nape and underneath more readily than looser textures, so lift the hair and check underneath rather than only combing the top layer. A brush through dry deep wave turns a defined unit into a frizzy one in about a minute, and on synthetic there is no way back.
