Clippers for Cutting Hair at Home in Detroit

Cutting hair at home saves money and, for a simple cut, is not difficult. Our Detroit store off Gratiot near 7 Mile stocks clippers and trimmers from basic home kits up to the machines barbers use, so the choice is about what you actually intend to do with it.

A home kit versus a professional machine

Home kits come with a clipper, a set of guards, scissors, a comb and a cape, and that's genuinely everything needed for a straightforward cut. Professional machines cost more, hold their power under thick hair and are built to be re-bladed for years. If you're cutting one head every few weeks, a kit does the job; if you're cutting several, the professional machine earns its price.

Guards and what the numbers mean

Guards are numbered, and each step is roughly an eighth of an inch. A number one leaves very short hair, a number four leaves a moderate length, an eight leaves considerably more. Going up in single steps between sections is how you blend one length into the next. Cutting with no guard leaves the hair at the blade's own length, which is very short.

Cutting without a disaster

Start longer than you want and work down, because you cannot put it back. Cut hair dry, since wet hair sits longer and misleads you. Move against the direction of growth. Work in sections and check both sides against each other often, because heads are not symmetrical and it is easy to over-correct one side.

What else to buy

A hand mirror for checking the back, a cape or an old towel, a neck brush, clipper oil and a cleaning brush. A trimmer for the neckline and around the ears if the kit doesn't include one, since edging with a full clipper is awkward and blunts it faster.

Our Detroit store

Our Detroit store is at 15221 Houston Whittier St, just off Gratiot near 7 Mile on the east side, and it's the one that handles every online pickup order. It opens at 8:45 AM every day but Sunday, with the latest closing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 PM. Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
