Individual and Cluster Lashes

Individual and cluster lashes are small groups of fibers applied a few at a time rather than as one strip. What you buy with the extra effort is placement: you decide exactly where the density goes, so you can fill a sparse patch, add length only at the outer corner, or build a full look that has no band at all sitting across your lid.

Individuals against clusters

Individuals are two or three fibers on a tiny knot and are used to fill and add subtly. Clusters are wider fans, typically five to twelve fibers, and cover more ground per placement, which makes them much faster and more visible. Clusters are what most people mean by DIY lash extensions. Individuals take longer and look more natural at close range.

The adhesive is different

This is the part people get wrong coming from strip lashes. Strip glue is designed to hold a band against the lid and peel off at the end of the night. Cluster and individual adhesives are made to bond fiber to your own lash hairs and to last days, and some are marketed as bond-and-seal systems with a separate sealant. They are not interchangeable. Using strip glue on clusters gives you a day at best; using a long-wear bond means you must have the matching remover before you start.

The learning curve

Expect the first attempt to look uneven, and expect it to take far longer than the pack suggests. Work under good light with a mirror at eye level, place from the outer corner inward, and set each cluster onto your own lashes rather than onto the lid skin. Glue against the skin is the main cause of irritation and of clusters that pull when they come off. Fewer, well-placed clusters look better than a full set placed hastily.

Removal, which is not optional

Long-wear clusters must be dissolved off with the remover made for that adhesive, usually an oil-based or gel remover applied for a few minutes until the bond softens. Pulling them off takes your own lashes with them, and repeated pulling is how people end up with the sparse lash line they were covering in the first place. If the pack does not come with a remover, buy one at the same time.

Who they suit

People with gaps or a sparse outer corner, people who cannot get on with a band across the lid, and anyone who wants several days from one application. They suit you less if you are in a hurry, since a strip goes on in a minute and a cluster set does not.
