No to dye, and heat only if the label says heat-friendly. Ordinary hair color needs a cuticle to lift and a cortex to deposit into, and synthetic fiber has neither. Bleach does not lighten it, it destroys it. And standard synthetic fiber melts under an iron rather than restyling. Both of these are properties of the material, not limits of a particular brand.
Hair dye works chemically on protein. Synthetic hair is plastic filament that was colored during manufacture, so the color is inside the fiber rather than sitting on a surface that can be altered. Applied to a synthetic unit, permanent color mostly rinses away and leaves a patchy stain where it clung to fiber unevenly. Bleach is worse: it has nothing to lighten, so it simply degrades the filament, and the unit comes out dull, rough and shedding.
Alcohol-based inks, fabric dye and acrylic paint mixed with water all circulate as ways to color synthetic hair, and they can deposit color, since they are made for synthetic materials. They also stiffen the fiber, transfer onto skin and clothing, and are difficult to apply evenly across a whole unit. If you want to experiment on an old unit you no longer wear, that is a reasonable place to do it. It is not a way to change a unit you care about.
Heat-friendly or heat-resistant synthetic fiber tolerates a limited amount of heat, usually up to a stated temperature well below what you would use on human hair. It can be straightened or curled within that limit. What it does not do is bounce back: once you straighten a heat-friendly wavy unit, that section tends to stay straight, because the wave was set into the fiber with heat in the first place. Restyling is possible, but it is more of a one-way change than people expect.
If you are unsure whether a unit is heat-friendly and the label is gone, test on a small section underneath at the nape with the iron on its lowest setting. Standard fiber will singe, stick or melt immediately, and you will have learned it on a piece nobody sees.
Buy the color. Synthetic units come in every shade including ones that are difficult or damaging to achieve on human hair, and a second unit usually costs less than a failed attempt plus a replacement. If you want a color you can genuinely change later, that is the argument for a human hair unit.
