Colored and Fashion Wigs

Bold color is the one area where synthetic is not the compromise choice but the better one. A synthetic unit is colored at the fiber level before it is ever made into hair, so a burgundy or a blue is uniform from root to tip and stays that way. Getting the same result on human hair means lifting it to near-white first and then depositing color, which costs several times as much and leaves the hair weaker for it.

Why fiber color holds

Because the pigment is in the fiber rather than deposited on a cuticle, synthetic color does not wash out the way dyed human hair does. Reds and purples in particular, which bleed out of human hair within a few washes, stay put on synthetic. This is why the wig wall carries bright shades almost exclusively in synthetic and blends, and why they cost a fraction of a comparable human hair unit.

What does fade

Sunlight is the enemy. Sustained UV exposure lifts synthetic color over months, most noticeably on vivid shades and on the parts that face upward, so a unit worn all summer outdoors will look different at the crown than underneath. Storing it out of a sunny window between wears is a small habit that visibly extends its life.

Transfer onto clothing

Deeply saturated units, particularly reds, can transfer onto light fabric when they are damp, whether from rain, snow or sweat. It is worth knowing before you wear a new burgundy unit with a cream coat. A first wash before wearing removes loose surface pigment and cuts the risk considerably.

Choosing a shade that works

Fashion color reads very differently in daylight than under store lighting, and much more strongly against the skin than on a display head. Shades with some depth, like burgundy, deep plum or a soft copper, tend to be easier to wear day to day than flat primary colors. Root-shadowed units, dark at the scalp fading into color, look markedly more natural than a single flat shade because real hair is never one color.

Care

Wash cool, comb from the ends, and skip heat unless the label says heat-friendly. Do not attempt to dye a synthetic unit: standard hair dye needs a cuticle to work on and simply will not take, and bleach destroys the fiber. If you want a different color, another unit costs less than the failed attempt.
