A silk press is natural hair straightened with heat alone, no chemicals, finished so it moves and swings like relaxed hair. It is a sequence rather than a single tool: clean hair, a deep conditioner, a smooth blow dry, then a flat iron in small sections. Most of the result is decided before the flat iron comes out.
Heat on dirty hair bakes product and oil onto the strand, and the finished press looks dull and falls flat within days. Wash with a clarifying or regular shampoo depending on how much buildup you have, then use a deep conditioner, because hair that goes into a blow dryer dry and brittle breaks under the brush. Rinse the conditioner out completely. Leftover conditioner weighs the press down.
Apply it to damp hair before the blow dryer, working it through section by section so every strand gets some. A protectant does not make high heat safe; it only reduces how much damage a reasonable temperature does. If your hair still feels dry after blow drying, a very small amount of serum on the ends is enough. Heavy oils sizzle under a flat iron.
This step does most of the straightening. Use a blow dryer with a comb attachment, or a paddle brush and a concentrator nozzle, and work in sections from the ends up to the roots, pointing the air down the hair shaft. The smoother the hair is after the blow dry, the fewer flat iron passes you need, and fewer passes is what keeps natural hair healthy.
Take sections about an inch wide. Comb each one straight, then run the flat iron slowly down right behind the comb, known as the chase method, so the hair is held taut. One slow pass beats three fast ones. Ceramic and titanium plates both work; titanium heats faster and runs hotter, so thick hair tends to suit it, while fine hair tends to do better on ceramic. A thin iron is easier near the roots and edges.
Steam that smells burnt, hair that looks shiny but feels crunchy, and ends that stay straight after washing. That last one is heat damage and does not return to curly; it has to be trimmed out over time. If you see it, lower the temperature on the next press and space presses at least a few weeks apart.
Sleep with the hair wrapped: comb it around the head and tie a satin scarf over it, or pin curl it and cover with a bonnet. Keep water and steam away, which means a shower cap in the bathroom and saving workouts for the end of the press. When the roots start to puff, a light pass on the roots only is gentler than redoing the whole head.
A flat iron with adjustable heat, a blow dryer with a comb attachment or a paddle brush, sectioning clips, a fine-tooth comb for the chase method, heat protectant, shampoo and deep conditioner, and a satin scarf or bonnet for night.
