Corded and cordless

A corded clipper never runs out mid-cut and delivers constant power, which is why many barbers keep one for bulk work. A cordless machine moves freely around a chair, which is faster and more comfortable, but it loses power as the battery drains and needs charging discipline. Machines that run corded or cordless remove the choice, and are worth the small premium.

Motor types

Magnetic motors are the most common, run fast and are relatively quiet, but can stall in very thick hair. Rotary motors deliver steadier torque and handle dense or wet hair better, usually costing more. Pivot motors sit between the two with high torque at lower speed, suiting thick hair and slower work. For general use a good magnetic machine is fine; for coarse or thick hair, rotary is worth the money.

Battery matters more than run time on the box

Lithium batteries hold power steadily and then drop off, while older battery types fade gradually, which shows in the cut. Published run times assume a new battery and light use. What matters in practice is whether the machine can recharge quickly enough to be back in service, and whether the battery is replaceable rather than sealed in.

Noise, weight and the practical stuff

Weight decides comfort over a full day more than any feature. Noise matters if you cut children's hair. A cord long enough to reach the socket without an extension is worth checking, since cords vary and a short one restricts where you can work.
