Remy Hair in Detroit: What It Means

Remy is the single most useful word on a bundle label, and it describes something physical rather than a marketing grade. What remy actually describes

In remy hair, every strand has been kept aligned root to tip, so all the cuticles face the same direction. Cuticles are microscopic scales that lie flat in one direction and catch against each other in the other. Aligned, they slide past each other and the hair stays smooth. Mixed, they lock together, which is tangling.

Why non-remy matts

Non-remy hair is collected without keeping direction, so roughly half the strands run opposite to the rest. Manufacturers often strip the cuticle and apply a silicone coating to compensate, which feels excellent in the pack and for the first few washes. Once the coating wears off, the mismatched cuticles grip and the hair matts, usually at the nape first.

Telling them apart

Run your fingers down a strand and then back up. Remy hair feels smooth in both directions; heavily coated non-remy feels unusually slippery. Price is a strong signal, since remy costs meaningfully more. Wash a small amount if you can: coated hair changes character after the coating goes, which is exactly what you don't want discovering mid-install.

Is it worth it

If the install is short-term, non-remy is a reasonable saving. For anything worn for weeks, or a set you hope to reuse, remy costs less per wear because it survives washing and restyling. Virgin remy, which has had no chemical processing at all, is the top of that range and the most predictable if you plan to color it.
