Press-ons have become genuinely good, and the difference between a set that lasts two days and one that lasts two weeks is almost entirely in the twenty minutes before they go on. Sizing and prep are the whole job; the sticking part is easy.
Lay the set out and match each tip to each finger before any adhesive appears. A tip should sit inside your sidewalls without pressing against the skin on either side, and should cover the nail bed without overhanging the cuticle. If a nail sits between two sizes, take the larger and file the sides down. A tip that is too narrow leaves gaps where water gets underneath, which is the usual reason a nail lifts on day two.
Push the cuticles back gently, file the free edge to a consistent shape, and buff the surface lightly to take the shine off, which gives the adhesive something to grip. Then wipe every nail with alcohol or a nail dehydrator and do not touch them afterward. Oil from your skin is the most common invisible cause of a set that will not stay on. This is also why applying press-ons straight after moisturizing your hands does not work.
Nail glue gives the longest wear, up to two weeks, and takes more effort to remove. Adhesive tabs are gentler, come off easily, and last a few days at most, which makes them the right choice for a single event or for anyone whose natural nails are fragile. Neither is better; they suit different purposes. If you use glue, apply a thin layer to both the natural nail and the tip, press from the cuticle down at an angle to push out air bubbles, and hold for thirty seconds per nail.
Ten days to two weeks with glue and good prep. What cuts it short: water exposure in the first few hours, oils and lotions on the nail before application, using your nails as tools, and gaps at the sidewalls from a poor size match. If one lifts, remove it properly and reapply rather than pushing it back down over trapped moisture.
Soak in warm soapy water, or in acetone for a glued set, until the adhesive softens, then ease the tip off gently with an orange stick. This takes fifteen to twenty minutes and it is not optional. Prying a glued press-on off takes layers of your natural nail with it, and doing that repeatedly leaves nails thin, weak and rough. After removal, buff lightly, apply cuticle oil, and give the nails a few days before the next set.
