Nail Polish Types and Finishes

Three systems dominate the shelf, and they differ in how long they last, how they come off, and how much equipment they need. Choosing between them is mostly about how much you value durability against how easily you want to change your mind.

Regular polish

Air dries, needs no lamp, comes off with ordinary remover, and lasts three to five days before chipping. It is the most forgiving and the least committal, and it is the only system where changing color on a whim costs nothing. The trade is durability, and no top coat closes that gap entirely.

Gel

Cured under a lamp, lasts two to three weeks without chipping, and needs acetone and soaking to remove. It requires the lamp and the discipline of proper removal, and in exchange it survives everything regular polish does not. It is the sensible choice for anyone who works with their hands or simply cannot face redoing a manicure weekly.

Dip powder

The nail is coated in a bonding liquid then dipped into colored powder, repeated in layers and sealed. It lasts around three weeks, needs no lamp, and is thicker and stronger than gel. Two cautions: never dip your fingers into a communal jar, since that contaminates the powder for everyone, and pour what you need instead. And removal is acetone soaking, the same as gel.

What top coats do

More than most people credit. A good top coat seals the free edge, adds the gloss, and takes the abrasion that would otherwise reach your color. Reapplying a regular top coat every two or three days visibly extends a manicure. Fast-dry top coats set the surface quickly but not the layers underneath, which brings us to the next point.

Drying properly

Regular polish is touch-dry in minutes and fully hard in hours. Almost every dented manicure happened in that gap. Thin coats dry far faster and harder than thick ones. Cool water over the nails after ten minutes helps set them. Quick-dry drops work on the surface. The only genuine fix is thin coats and patience.

Why manicures chip

In order: coats applied too thick, the free edge not sealed, oil or lotion on the nail before the base coat, and no base coat at all. Chipping that starts at the tip within a day is nearly always an unsealed edge, and swiping the brush across the tip of the nail with every coat is the fix.
