Removing Acrylics and Gel Safely

Almost all the damage blamed on acrylics and gel happens in the ten minutes they come off, not the three weeks they were on. Product soaked off with patience leaves the nail nearly as it was. Product pried, peeled or picked off takes the top layers of the nail plate with it, and that is the thin, bendy, ridged nail people show as proof that enhancements ruin nails.

Why prying wrecks the nail

The bond between enhancement and nail is stronger than the bond between the layers of the nail itself. Force the product up and the nail splits along its own layers rather than releasing the product cleanly. Each layer lost takes months to grow out, since the nail plate only renews from the base. One rough removal costs more than a year of careful sets.

Acrylic removal

File the surface down first to thin the product and break the seal of any top coat, which cuts soaking time considerably. Soak cotton in pure acetone, hold it against each nail with foil or a soak-off clip, and wait. Fifteen to thirty minutes for a thinned set, longer for thick acrylic. The product should go soft and gummy and push off with an orange stick using almost no pressure. If it resists, wrap it again. Do not scrape.

Gel removal

The same method, and quicker. File off the shiny top layer so the acetone can get in, wrap for ten to fifteen minutes, then push the softened gel off gently. Soak-off gel comes away in flakes; hard gel and builder gel often do not dissolve and have to be filed off, which is a job for a steady hand and ideally a professional.

Dip powder

Dip is thick and takes the longest. File it down substantially first, then soak, and expect twenty to thirty minutes. It comes off in the same soft layers as acrylic once the acetone has done its work. Trying to shortcut dip removal is where most of the peeling-nail complaints about the system come from.

Afterward

Acetone dries the nail and the skin around it. Wash your hands, buff the nail surface lightly if it is rough, and apply cuticle oil generously, then keep applying it daily. A hand cream over the top helps. The nails will feel soft and thin for a day or two as they rehydrate, which is normal and different from the permanent thinning that comes from prying.

Breaks between sets

A week or two with bare nails and daily cuticle oil every few sets lets the plate recover its moisture and gives you a look at its actual condition. If nails are peeling, ridged or splitting, extend the break until they stop. Going straight from removal into a new set on a nail that is already thin is how the cycle of damage continues.
