Mousse, Holding Spray, Spritz and Oil Sheen

The styling and finishing aisle covers what goes on after the hair is clean and conditioned, and each product in it does one specific job rather than a general one. Mousse, gels, setting lotions, holding sprays, serums and shine products are stocked across all four stores.

Mousse

A foam that adds hold and definition without the stiffness of gel. It's used on damp hair for a set or a wash-and-go, on braids and twists to smooth the finish and reduce frizz, and on crochet and synthetic hair to define a curl pattern. Applied to soaking hair it dilutes and does nothing, so damp rather than wet.

Holding spray and spritz

Holding spray sets a finished style in place with a firmer hold and is what keeps a wrap or a set from dropping. Spritz is lighter, often with added sheen, and is used through a style rather than over it. Both build up if used daily without washing properly, particularly on braids where residue collects along the parts.

Oil sheen

A fine aerosol mist that adds shine without weight. It's a finishing product rather than a moisturizer, so it sits on top of the hair and does nothing for dryness underneath. Used over a leave-in it looks good; used instead of one it coats dry hair and hides the problem.

What order they go in

Leave-in or cream on damp hair first, since that's what carries moisture. Mousse or gel next for hold and definition. Dry the hair. Then holding spray, spritz or oil sheen last as a finish. Applying a finishing product before the hair is dry is the most common ordering mistake.
