What You Need for Micro Braids

Micro braids are the smallest braid size anyone installs, often no wider than a pencil lead at the base. They give the most natural movement of any braid style and the most convincing illusion of loose hair, and they ask more of you than any other braid in this range: more hair, far more time, and a real commitment to careful take-down.

How much hair to buy

Section size drives everything. Where jumbo braids might use three or four packs, a full head of micros commonly runs eight to ten, and past shoulder length it can go higher. Pre-stretched hair helps here more than in any other style, because you are matching hundreds of tapered ends rather than a few dozen. Buy the whole amount in one purchase so the color code and batch match across the head, and buy one pack past your estimate. Running out at hour nine is a genuinely bad position to be in.

Plan the time honestly

A full head of micro braids is not an afternoon. Depending on length and how fast the braider works, it runs from eight hours into a second day, and many braiders split it across two sessions on purpose. If you are doing your own, work in horizontal rows from the nape up and accept that finishing over two or three evenings is normal rather than a failure.

Where the tension risk sits

The weight of a micro braid is small, but the anchor holding it is also small, and that is the problem. A tiny section carrying even a modest length of added hair concentrates pull on very few strands. Along the hairline and the nape, where the hair is finest to begin with, that is how micros earn their reputation. Keep perimeter sections slightly larger than the rest, stop if the scalp stings or the skin lifts around a part, and skip the style entirely if your edges are already thin.

Take-down is the real job

Micro braids come down slowly. Every braid has to be unraveled individually, and hundreds of small braids each hold the hair that shed while they were in. Cut the added length off first to reduce bulk, work through a conditioner or oil to keep the hair slippery, and take breaks. The hair that comes out in handfuls is mostly weeks of normal shedding released at once, not damage, but rushing the process with a comb turns it into damage quickly.

Wear time and what comes after

Six to eight weeks is a sensible ceiling. Micros can physically stay in longer, which is exactly why people over-wear them and pay for it at the roots. Wash and deep condition after take-down, trim any splits, and give the hair a stretch of loose or low-tension wear before installing anything that pulls again.
