The first braided style sets what a child expects from every one after it. If it hurts, they will remember, and getting them into a chair the next time is harder. Choosing something simple, keeping it loose, and keeping the appointment short matters more than the style looking impressive.
Simple cornrows going straight back, chunky two-strand twists, or a few large braids. Larger sections, fewer of them, and no added hair for a first style. Added length adds weight and sitting time, and neither helps a child who has never done this. If you want beads, add a small number at the ends rather than throughout.
Far less than an adult. A young child manages thirty to sixty minutes before it stops going well, and a school-age child perhaps two hours with breaks. Book a style that fits inside that window rather than hoping they will stretch to it. If the style genuinely needs longer, split it over two sittings, or over two days. A braider who works with children will plan for this; one who does not may push through, which is where a bad first experience comes from.
A child's hairline is finer and more easily damaged than an adult's, and traction damage from styles worn too tight in childhood can still show years later. Ask specifically for a loose perimeter. No small braids at the temples. Nothing that lifts the skin around a part or leaves bumps along a row. If your child says it hurts, that is information, and the row should be loosened or taken out. A style that lasts three weeks comfortably beats one that lasts eight because it was installed hard.
Two to four weeks for a child, and toward the shorter end for a young child. Children sweat more, play harder and sleep less carefully than adults, so styles fuzz and loosen faster. Keeping a style in past the point where it looks grown out is where matting starts, and take-down on a child who is already tired of it is not a pleasant afternoon for anyone.
Tell them what will happen and roughly how long. Wash, detangle and stretch the hair the day before, not the morning of, so the appointment is only braiding. Bring something to occupy them. Let them choose the bead colors or the parting pattern, which gives them a stake in the result. And plan something they like afterward, so the whole thing ends well.
