What You Need for Cornrows

Cornrows are the foundation style. They can be worn on their own with no added hair at all, they can carry extensions for length, and they are the base underneath most crochet installs, sew-ins and wigs. Because so much else sits on top of them, getting the base right matters beyond how the cornrows themselves look.

Parting is most of the work

A cornrow is only as clean as the section under it. A rat-tail comb, good lighting and patience produce the straight lines; nothing else does. Clip each finished row out of the way so it does not creep into the next section. Curved and geometric patterns are harder than straight-back rows for one reason: the section width has to stay even as the line bends, and any drift shows immediately.

Gel and product

A light gel or edge control along each part keeps stray hairs down and gives the row definition. Use it sparingly. Heavy product on the scalp under a style you will wear for weeks turns into flaking buildup, which is both uncomfortable and hard to remove without taking the whole style down. Damp hair with a leave-in is easier to braid than dry hair, but soaking wet hair shrinks as it dries and can tighten a braid that felt fine when you put it in.

Hair choice, if you add any

Plain cornrows on natural hair need nothing bought at all. If you want length or thickness, pre-stretched or bulk braiding hair fed in gradually gives the flattest result. Two to four packs covers most full-head patterns. For a base underneath something else, add nothing: extra bulk under a wig or a sew-in creates lumps and pressure points.

When cornrows are a base

Under crochet, the pattern determines how the style falls, and straight-back rows suit most hanging styles while a beehive spiral suits shorter, fuller looks. Under a sew-in, rows need to be flat and firm enough to hold thread without being tight. Under a wig, flat and low is the only requirement, and a satin wig cap over the top stops friction on the braids.
