Washing and Conditioning a Human Hair Wig

Washing is where most human hair units are damaged, usually by being treated like hair on a head rather than hair on a cap. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile stocks human hair wigs, wig shampoos, conditioners and stands, open until 8:45 PM most nights.

How often

Far less than your own hair. Every eight to ten wears is a reasonable rhythm, or when it starts to feel coated with product or look dull. There's no scalp producing oil, so a wig does not get greasy; it gets dirty from product and the environment. Over-washing dries it out and loosens the knots holding the hair to the cap.

Detangle before water touches it

Comb it through with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward while it's dry, or lightly misted. Tangles that go into water become mats, and mats at the nape are the usual reason a unit is retired early. Take your time here; it's the step that decides how the wash goes.

Washing without wrecking the cap

Use cool or lukewarm water and a sulfate-free shampoo. Hold the wig by the cap and stroke the shampoo downward through the hair rather than scrubbing, piling or circling, which tangles it and stresses the knots. Rinse in the same downward direction. Condition the lengths and ends, keeping conditioner off the cap and the lace, which loosens the base.

Drying and storing

Press water out with a towel, never wring. Air dry on a stand or a mannequin head, away from direct heat and sun. A wig dried balled in a towel dries misshapen and matted. Once dry, store it on the stand or in a satin bag with the hair combed in one direction. Rotating between two units roughly doubles how long each one lasts.
