A slipping wig is almost always one of three things: the cap is too big, the hair underneath is not flat, or the built-in straps and combs are not being used. Adhesive is the last item on that list rather than the first, and most people who think they need glue actually need a better fit.
Take three measurements: around the head along the hairline, front hairline to nape, and ear to ear over the crown. Caps come in petite, average and large, and an average cap on a petite head will lift no matter what you do to it. The adjustable straps inside the back of the cap cover a range of about an inch and are meant to fine-tune a correct size, not rescue a wrong one.
Bulk under a cap is the second most common cause. Cornrow or flat-twist your hair close to the head, going back rather than piling anything at the crown, and pin any ends down flat. A high bun or a thick braid under a cap creates a dome the wig rocks on. Over the braids, a wig cap gives grip and stops your own hair working its way out, and a nylon cap grips less than a mesh or a soft grip cap does.
Most units have two or three combs sewn inside and an adjustable strap at the back. The front comb pushes into hair at the hairline, the side combs anchor at the temples, and the back strap tightens the cap. Many people never use them. Together they hold a well-fitting unit securely enough for a normal day without any adhesive at all.
A velvet or silicone grip band worn around the head under the cap adds friction and is the most effective non-adhesive fix, especially for anyone with very smooth or very little hair underneath. Sewing an elastic band across the nape inside the cap, from ear to ear, pulls the unit down snugly and is a common adjustment on lace units worn without glue. Both cost little and are reversible.
For a lace front you want flat against the skin at the hairline, for an event where the unit cannot move, or for anyone whose own hairline gives nothing to grip. Use a product made for lace, on clean skin prepped with alcohol, let it go tacky, and always own the matching remover before you apply any of it. Adhesive is a tool for the hairline, not a substitute for a cap that fits.
