Hair Mousse: What It Is For

Mousse is a foam that dispenses light, spreads easily and dries with a soft hold. It sits between a leave-in, which does not hold at all, and a gel, which holds hard. That middle position is exactly why it is useful for some jobs and pointless for others, and it is worth knowing which is which before buying a can.

Setting and roller work

Mousse on damp hair before rollers, rods or a wrap gives the set something to hold onto without the stiffness of a setting lotion. The result is a softer curl that brushes out easily, which suits anyone who wants movement rather than a defined, structured set. If you want a set that lasts several days and holds hard, setting lotion does that better; if you want a set you will brush out into body the same day, mousse is the right choice.

Finishing braids and twists

This is where mousse is most used and least talked about. A light mousse over a finished braid or twist style lays down the flyaway ends of synthetic hair, cuts the frizz that develops within a week, and adds a small amount of sheen without the greasiness of oil. It is the standard refresh for braids that have gone fuzzy at the crown, and it works on styles that oils would weigh down.

Working with synthetic hair

Synthetic fiber frizzes as it is handled, and mousse is one of the few products that calms it without flattening it. On crochet styles, twists and wigs, a small amount smoothed over the surface tidies the whole thing. It is not a substitute for the water-and-conditioner refresh that revives a curl pattern; it is what you use afterward to hold the result.

Root volume

On fine or limp hair, mousse applied at the roots of damp hair and dried with a dryer lifts the hair away from the scalp. This is the one job where a firmer hold mousse is worth having, since a soft-hold formula will collapse by lunchtime.

How much to use

A palmful of foam is more than most people need, and too much leaves a tacky film that dulls hair and attracts dust. Start with a golf ball of foam for a full head, work it through damp hair, and add more only where it is needed. Mousse builds up like anything else, so a clarifying wash every few weeks keeps the hair responsive.
