Caring for Color-Treated Hair in Warren

Wait before the first wash

Give color at least 48 hours before washing. The cuticle stays slightly open after processing and color molecules continue settling; washing too early rinses out what hasn't anchored. When you do wash, cooler water keeps the cuticle flatter and holds color longer than hot.

Sulfate-free is worth it here

Sulfates strip color faster than anything else in a normal routine. A sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo is the single most effective purchase for making color last. Washing less often helps too, and dry shampoo covers the days in between without water touching the hair.

Toning at home

Color drifts warm as it fades, which is why blondes go brassy and browns turn reddish. Purple shampoo counteracts yellow in blonde hair; blue counteracts orange in brown. Use them once a week or so rather than every wash, since overuse leaves a dull violet cast. Leave them on for the time on the bottle, not longer.

Repairing as you go

Colored hair is more porous, so it loses moisture faster and tangles more. A weekly deep conditioner and a protein treatment every few weeks keeps it manageable. Heat protectant matters more on colored hair than on virgin hair, since the shaft is already compromised, and lowering iron temperature by a setting or two costs nothing.
