Washing and Caring for a Sew-In

Bundles are the most expensive thing most people buy in a beauty supply, and how long they last is decided almost entirely by care rather than by price. Washing a sew-in without wrecking it

Dilute shampoo and apply it to the scalp along the tracks with an applicator bottle, working with fingertips rather than nails. Let the suds run down the hair rather than piling it up and scrubbing, which is what tangles wefts. Condition the hair only, keeping it off the tracks, then rinse thoroughly. Wash every one to two weeks rather than every few days.

Drying is where installs go wrong

Wet tracks left to dry on their own are how odour and scalp problems start. Sit under a dryer or use a blow dryer on cool to medium directed at the base until the braids underneath are genuinely dry, not just the surface hair. This is the step most people cut short and the one that matters most.

Keeping the hair itself soft

Bundle hair has no scalp feeding it oil, so it dries out from the ends up. A leave-in conditioner and a light oil through the mid-lengths and ends, every few days, keeps it from going brittle. Avoid heavy products at the root, which build up on the tracks. Heat styling accelerates dryness, so a protectant is not optional if you iron it.

Night care and lifespan

Wrap the hair or tie it in a loose braid and cover with a satin bonnet or scarf. Friction against a pillow overnight is what mats the nape. With that routine, good bundles survive multiple installs; without it, they look tired within one.
