Daily Wear and Protecting the Hair Underneath

A wig worn most days is a protective style, and like any protective style it protects only if the hair underneath is being looked after. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile carries glueless units alongside the caps, cleansers and scalp products, open until 8:45 PM most nights.

Your hair still needs a routine

Under a wig, hair is out of sight and easy to neglect. It still needs washing, conditioning and moisturizing on a normal schedule, and it still needs the ends looked after. Take the unit off at night, or at minimum every few days, and give the hair and scalp air, a light moisturizer and a gentle detangle.

Where the damage comes from

Not the wig itself, but the friction and tension around it. Combs pressed into the same spot daily, an elastic band sitting on the same line, a cap pulled tight over the hairline. Move the combs slightly between wears, don't overtighten straps, and if you use a band, position it against a wig cap rather than directly on your hairline.

Cornrows underneath need maintenance too

A braided base left in for weeks under a wig gets the same problems as any braid style: buildup, itching and loosening at the roots. Redo the base every couple of weeks rather than leaving it until it looks bad, and wash the scalp between installs.

Caring for the unit

Wash the wig when it starts to look dull or feel coated, using a shampoo made for the fiber. Air dry on a stand rather than balled up. Store it on a stand or in a satin bag so the cap keeps its shape and the hair doesn't mat at the nape. A unit rotated with a second one lasts noticeably longer than one worn every single day.

Monday through Saturday it's open until 8:45 PM.
