Matte, Dewy and Satin Finishes

Finish is the half of a foundation decision that gets ignored while everyone concentrates on shade. Two foundations can be exactly the same color and look nothing alike on the same face, because one is flattening light and the other is bouncing it back. Matching the finish to your skin and to the weather is what stops a correct shade from looking wrong.

What the three actually mean

Matte foundation dries down with no shine and usually carries the most coverage, which reads as flat and even. Dewy leaves light-reflecting product on the surface so the skin looks damp and lit from within. Satin sits between the two, slightly luminous without looking wet, and it is the safest pick if you only want one bottle. Labels are unreliable, so judge a formula by what it is doing an hour after it goes on.

Matching it to your skin

Oily skin does better in matte or satin, because a dewy base plus your own oil reads as greasy within a couple of hours. Dry or mature skin does better in dewy or satin, since matte formulas cling to dry patches and emphasize texture and fine lines. Combination skin can split the difference: satin everywhere and a dust of powder only on the T-zone. Skin with active breakouts generally looks calmer matte.

The season changes the answer

A Michigan summer makes a matte formula look right and a dewy one slide, particularly on a humid August afternoon. The same dewy foundation is a much better idea in February, when indoor heat leaves skin tight and a matte base turns chalky by noon. Plenty of people reasonably keep two, or keep one satin foundation and change the primer and powder around it instead.

How each wears through a day

Matte holds longest but shows every patch once it begins to break down, usually around the nose and chin. Dewy fades gracefully but needs blotting, and over eight hours it can disappear into the skin altogether. Satin tends to drift slightly more matte as the hours pass. Whichever you wear, blot the oil off before adding anything on top, because product over shine is what separates and goes patchy.

Changing a finish you already own

A matte foundation can be warmed up with a hydrating primer underneath, a drop of facial oil mixed into it, or a liquid highlighter on the cheekbones. A dewy one can be brought down with a mattifying primer and powder where you shine. That is usually quicker than buying another bottle. It is also worth checking a flash photograph, since a dewy base can come back shiny and a heavily powdered one can come back pale.
