Earring Metals, Tones and Keeping Them Looking New

Two earrings that look identical on the wall can behave completely differently after a month of wear, and the difference is almost always the metal. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile carries earrings alongside necklaces, rings and body jewelry, and it's open until 8:45 PM most nights.

Gold tone, silver tone and rose

Metal tone is a wardrobe decision more than a rule. Warmer skin tones generally carry gold tone comfortably, cooler skin tones carry silver, and rose sits between the two. What matters more in practice is what else you wear: if your everyday rings and watch are one tone, earrings in the same tone read as deliberate rather than accidental. Mixing tones works when it's clearly on purpose.

Why plated pieces change color

Plating is a thin layer over a base metal, and it wears through wherever the piece rubs against skin or clothing. Sweat, perfume and hairspray all speed that up. Once the base metal is exposed it discolors and can irritate a piercing, which is why plated studs tend to fail before plated drops do.

Making a pair last

Put jewelry on last, after perfume, hairspray, edge control and lotion have dried, and take it off first at the end of the day. Wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth before putting them away. Store them somewhere dry and not jumbled together, since pieces scratching against each other is what dulls a finish faster than wear does.

What to do about a reaction

If a pair leaves your lobes sore, stop wearing them rather than pushing through, and switch to surgical steel or titanium. A clear barrier coat on the post is a temporary fix at best. New piercings should only see implant-grade metal until they've fully healed.
