Where they beat clip-ins

For any style worn up, a drawstring piece is faster, cheaper and more secure than clipping in a full set and then gathering everything. For an everyday high ponytail or a sleek gathered look, nothing else is as quick. Clip-ins win when the hair is worn down, where length needs distributing through your own hair.

Blending the join

The join is where a ponytail piece succeeds or fails. Gather your own hair smoothly with gel or edge control so there's no bump under the piece. Place the comb into the base of your gathered hair, pull the drawstrings snug, then wrap a small section of your own hair around the join and pin it, which hides the transition completely.

Matching texture

The piece needs to match how you wear your own gathered hair, not how it naturally is. If you slick your hair back with gel, a straight or lightly textured piece blends. If you gather it in its natural texture, a kinky or curly piece matches far better. This is the most common reason a good piece still looks obvious.

Care

Store it flat or hanging rather than balled in a drawer, with the hair combed in one direction. Wash it only when it looks dull or feels coated, using a gentle shampoo, and air dry. Synthetic pieces should not see heat unless labeled heat-friendly.
