Caring for Crochet Braids and Taking Them Down

Crochet styles are worn for weeks, and what happens during those weeks decides whether your own hair comes out better or worse than it went in. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile stocks crochet hair and the care products alongside it, open until 8:45 PM most nights.

Washing without ruining the set

The scalp needs washing even under a crochet style. Diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle, aimed at the parts, worked in with fingertips, then rinsed thoroughly. Do not scrub the hair itself, which frizzes the crochet and loosens knots. Drying matters more than washing: get the roots properly dry, because damp cornrows under a full head of hair is how odour and itching start.

Keeping it looking new

Frizz starts at the crown and the perimeter, where friction is highest. A satin bonnet or scarf at night is the single most effective habit. During the day, a light oil or mousse smooths flyaways without weighing the style down. For curly styles, a spray bottle with water and a little conditioner revives the pattern when it starts to look tired.

How long to keep it in

Six to eight weeks is the usual comfortable range. Past that, new growth loosens the cornrow base, knots start slipping, and the hair underneath has gone too long without proper attention. A style that has started slipping is telling you it's time rather than asking for repairs.

Taking it down

Cut the crochet hair below the knot, well clear of your own, then unpick the knot rather than dragging it through. Work the cornrows down one section at a time with a slippery conditioner. The volume that comes out is weeks of ordinary shedding arriving at once, which looks alarming and is not damage.
