Crochet is the fastest way into a full protective style and the one most people can do on themselves. Pre-looped hair is pulled through a cornrow base with a hook rather than braided in strand by strand, which cuts the install from many hours to a few.

The style families

Passion and spring twists give a soft textured twist that's light to wear. Faux locs mimic locs without the commitment and are the heaviest option. Curly and water-wave styles give volume and hide the knots best. Straight and body wave give the sleekest finish and show the install most, so they want a careful hand.

The base decides the result

Everything rests on the cornrows underneath. They need to be neat, even and not too tight, and the pattern depends on how you'll wear the style: straight-back rows for hair worn down, a beehive or circular pattern if you want to part it or wear it up.

What you need

Pre-looped crochet hair, a latch hook or crochet needle, a rat-tail comb and clips for sectioning, and rubber bands or thread for the base. Mousse or setting lotion for curly styles, or rods if it finishes in a set curl. A light scalp oil with a nozzle for the parts.
