Customizing a Closure or Frontal Before Install

A frontal straight out of the pack rarely looks natural, and the work that makes it convincing happens before it goes anywhere near your head. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile stocks closures, frontals and the products for customizing them, and it's open until 8:45 PM most nights if you're preparing a piece the evening before.

Work on a mannequin head

Pin the piece to a mannequin head first. Every step below is easier, more even and less likely to damage the lace when the piece is held flat and taut, and none of it is comfortable to do on your own head in a mirror.

Plucking the hairline

Straight out of the pack the hairline is too dense and too even, which is what reads as fake. Using tweezers, remove hairs sparsely along the very front, working a small amount at a time and stepping back often. It's easy to take too much and impossible to put back. Vary the line slightly rather than plucking a perfect arc, since real hairlines aren't symmetrical.

Bleaching knots and tinting lace

The dark knots where each hair is tied to the lace can show as dots against light skin. Bleaching them lightens those points, though it weakens the lace and the hair if overdone, so it's a step to be cautious with on HD lace. Tinting the lace itself with a lace spray or a light dust of foundation in your skin tone does more for realism and carries less risk.

Cutting the lace

Cut the excess lace only after the piece is positioned and you know where your hairline sits, and cut in small zigzag movements rather than one straight line, which is harder to detect at the edge. Leave a little more than you think you need, since you can trim again but not add lace back.
