Caring for Clip-In Extensions

Clip-ins last longer than any other extension type, because they come out at night and spend most of their life not being worn. That's only true if they're cared for. Our Roseville store at Gratiot and 12 Mile carries the sets and the products that go with them, open until 8:45 PM most nights.

Wash far less than you think

Extensions have no scalp feeding them oil, so they do not get greasy the way your own hair does. Washing them every wear dries them out and shortens their life. Every eight to ten wears is a reasonable rhythm, or sooner if you use a lot of product. Between washes, a light brush is usually all they need.

How to wash them

Use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo, work downward rather than scrubbing, and keep the clips and the weft band out of the water where you can, since repeated soaking loosens the stitching. Condition the lengths and ends only. Rinse in cool water, press the water out with a towel rather than wringing, and lay them flat or hang to air dry. Never put a weft band under a hot dryer.

Brushing and heat

Brush from the ends upward with a soft or looped brush, holding the weft above where you're working so you're not pulling on the stitching. If they're human hair, keep heat moderate and use a protectant, because the hair cannot repair itself the way growing hair does. Synthetic sets should not see heat at all unless the pack says heat-friendly.

Storage is the part people skip

Rolled into a ball in a drawer is how a good set turns into a tangled one. Store them flat or hanging, ideally in the case they came in or a satin bag, with the wefts laid straight rather than folded. Clips fastened onto each other keeps them from catching on everything else.

It's the closest Kelly Beauty for Roseville, Fraser, Clinton Township, Mount Clemens and anyone coming down Gratiot or I-94 from northern Macomb County. Monday through Saturday it's open until 8:45 PM.
