Matching hair to the style

Box and knotless braids generally use pre-stretched synthetic, which grips well and gives a clean taper. Passion and spring twists use textured or curly hair. Crochet styles use pre-looped hair installed with a hook rather than braided in strand by strand. Feed-in cornrows use the least hair of any of them.

How much you need

Length is the main driver: the longer the style, the more packs, because each braid carries hair down its whole length. Braid size matters too, with smaller braids taking more. Buying one or two spare packs and returning the unopened ones costs nothing and saves a second trip mid-install.
