Braiding Hair in Detroit

Our Detroit store carries braiding hair across the full range, and the choice is wider than most people expect walking in. Fiber, pre-stretched or bulk, length and color all change how a style installs and how long it holds. The store is off Gratiot near 7 Mile and opens at 8:45 AM most days, which is early enough to buy hair on the morning of an install.

Synthetic, blend or human

Synthetic braiding hair is the standard for most styles: it holds a braid well, comes in the widest color range and costs the least. Blend adds some human hair for a softer feel and a more natural finish. Human braiding hair looks and moves most naturally and takes heat, but costs considerably more and is usually reserved for styles where the hair is left loose at the ends.

Pre-stretched versus bulk

Pre-stretched hair comes tapered and ready to use, which saves the step of pulling and trimming the ends yourself and gives a cleaner taper on the finish. Bulk is blunt-cut and cheaper, and it suits people who prefer to stretch it themselves or need a specific length. If you're braiding for the first time, pre-stretched removes a step that's easy to get wrong.

Reading color codes

Colors run on numbered codes rather than names: 1 is jet black, 1B is off black, 2 is dark brown, 4 is medium brown, 27 and 30 are the honey and copper range, 613 is blonde. Codes starting with M are mixes and 2T or 3T indicate ombre with two or three tones. The same number can look slightly different between brands, so bring a wrapper if you're matching an existing style.

Texture matters as much as color

Straight, kinky, wavy and curly textures all braid differently. A kinky texture grips more and suits fluffy or bohemian finishes; straight synthetic gives the sleek look of knotless and box braids. Crochet hair is pre-looped for a different install entirely. If you're copying a style you saw, the texture is usually what makes it look right, not the length.

Our Detroit store

Our Detroit store is at 15221 Houston Whittier St, just off Gratiot near 7 Mile on the east side, and it's the one that handles every online pickup order. It opens at 8:45 AM every day but Sunday, with the latest closing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:15 PM. Coming from downtown or Midtown, Gratiot runs straight there; from the west side, 7 Mile or Davison to Conner is the quickest way over.
