A Working Stylist's Tool Kit

A kit assembled from what you genuinely reach for is smaller and better than one assembled from a list. Behind the chair, the same few combs, the same handful of clips and one or two irons do almost all of the work, and the rest of a drawer is there for the occasional service. Knowing which is which tells you where to spend and where a cheap version is entirely fine.

Combs, in four shapes

A cutting comb with fine teeth at one end and wider at the other, for sectioning and for cutting against. A tail comb for clean parting, which is the one you will lose most often, so own several. A wide-tooth comb for detangling wet hair and working conditioner through. A pick or lifting comb for volume and for dry textured hair. Carbon combs resist heat and do not build up static the way cheap plastic does, which matters if you work near irons and dryers.

Clips, and how many

More than you think, in two types: long metal duckbills that hold a thick section flat, and jaw or butterfly clips for parking bulk out of the way. A dozen duckbills is not excessive for a color service or a roller set, and being three clips short is the thing that makes a job feel chaotic. These are the definition of a place not to spend much, beyond avoiding the ones whose springs give out.

Where the money belongs

Shears and your irons. A flat iron with plates that close evenly and hold a set temperature passes over the hair once instead of three times, and a curling iron or wand with a reliable thermostat does the same, which means less heat on the client's hair over a career rather than one appointment. A dryer with real airflow and a proper concentrator nozzle saves you minutes on every blow-dry, and minutes per client are the whole economics of a chair.

Consumables and how often

Neck strips and gloves every client. End papers, cotton strips, foils, applicator bottles and color brushes run down steadily; a brush with splayed bristles streaks color and wants replacing long before it falls apart. Wash and check your brushes and combs between clients. Keep a spare of anything whose failure would end an appointment, which in practice means a spare pair of shears if you can, and spare blades for anything that takes them.

Carrying it

A case with fitted slots for shears and combs rather than a bag everything rattles in, because shears chipped against each other are the most expensive avoidable mistake in this list. Keep a small kit of the things you need every single day separate from the bulk supply, restock it at the end of a shift rather than the start of one, and it will not be the reason a day goes badly.
