The mistake at the start is buying broadly instead of deeply. A braider taking their first clients needs very few categories, and needs enough of each to get through an appointment without stopping. Everything else can wait until there is money coming in to pay for it, and waiting tells you which version of a thing you actually want rather than which one looked good on a shelf.

What you need before the first client

Hair in the colors you will actually be asked for, a styling gel and a light edge product, mousse or a finishing spray, rat-tail combs and a wide-tooth comb, a generous supply of sectioning clips, rubber bands, small scissors, a spray bottle, and a latch hook if you plan to offer crochet styles. A hand mirror so the client can see the back. That list fits in one bag and covers most protective styles.

What to put off

A hooded dryer, a steamer, a shampoo bowl, a branded cape and towel set, retail products to resell, and a second full set of everything. All of those are reasonable purchases for a braider with a steady book and wasted money for one with four appointments a month. Equally, resist buying every color of hair on the wall; two or three darks and one or two brights will cover the large majority of requests at the start.

Who buys the hair

Decide this before you quote anyone, and say it the same way every time. If the client brings the hair, you need to tell them how many packs and which type, and you need to be ready for the appointment where they bring the wrong thing. If you supply it, your price has to include it and you have to carry stock, which ties up money but gives you control over quality and color consistency. Many braiders start with the client supplying and switch later.

The workspace, which is about your hands

Good light directly on the head you are working on, a chair at a height that keeps your shoulders down rather than up, and something for the client to sit on that will be tolerable for six hours. Your back and your wrists are the equipment that wears out first in this trade, and they are cheaper to protect than to repair. Take breaks on long installs, for both of you.

The business side to check first

Licensing rules for braiding and natural hair services differ from state to state and change, so confirm what Michigan currently requires before you start charging, rather than after. Work out your price per style with the hours it actually takes you, not the hours an experienced braider takes. And write down what you spend on supplies from the first week, because the cost per install is the number that tells you whether a price is working.
